Click BitTorrent. Click the "Outgoing" drop-down box. Select Forced. Click Apply , then click OK. Buy a new router. If your router is more than a couple of years old, it will invariably begin to slow down, and it won't handle downloads as well as a newer one. When purchasing a new router, make sure you look at models that support the same download speed as your Internet package or, ideally, higher download speeds. Upgrade your Internet connection speed. Some Internet connections simply aren't able to handle hefty downloads, such as console or computer game installations.
Many ISPs have a "Gamer" package that prioritizes download speed, though you'll likely have to pay significantly more for this package than you would for a standard Internet package. Contact your Internet Service Provider. If you've tried everything else and you can't get your download speeds to increase, you'll need to call your ISP and tell them about the problems you're experiencing.
You may even need to switch your ISP if you live in a remote-enough area. Part 2. Click Change adapter options. This option is beneath the "Change your network settings" heading on the Status tab. Click your current connection's name. It will be on the Connections page.
This will select it. Click Change settings of this connection. This button is in the top row of options in the window. Clicking it will open the connection's settings. It's in the window that's in the middle of Wi-Fi Properties.
You may first need to click the Networking tab at the top of Wi-Fi Properties. Click Properties. It's near the bottom of the window. Check the "Use the following DNS server addresses" circle. It's near the bottom of the Properties window. Enter a preferred DNS address. Do so in the "Preferred DNS server" field. Google - Enter 8. Enter an alternate DNS address. Click OK. This saves your DNS settings.
Click Close. It's at the bottom of the window. Restart your computer. Once your computer finishes booting up, you can test your download speeds; if your network was the reason they were slow, they should be faster now. Click System Preferences. This is near the top of the Apple drop-down menu. Click Network. It's a globe-shaped icon in the System Preferences window.
Click your current Wi-Fi network. It should be in the pane on the left side of the window. Click Advanced. You'll find this near the middle of the window. Click the DNS tab. It's at the top of the window. For example, video streaming services like Netflix use a heavy amount of bandwidth. Temporarily disable the apps and see if that helps. To make it easier, try downloading one file at a time. Though this may seem counterintuitive, it can end up saving time. A router not only allows you to connect multiple devices, but it also acts as an antenna to extend the range of the Wi-Fi throughout your home.
The modem you have is typically provided by your service provider. Sometimes the fix can be as simple as restarting your modem. If your download speed has been significantly slow and you saw no change in speed after restarting, it may be time for a new modem. If your speed increases when you are directly next to the modem, this is a good sign, in which case your router may be the issue. As mentioned, the router allows you to extend your connectivity range. If your device is too far away from the router, this could be impacting your download speed.
The location of your router can have a major impact on your download speed as well. Be mindful of where you are placing your router as some areas in your home may not have a strong connectivity signal. If you have a large house, consider getting Wi-Fi extenders that can boost the range and increase your internet speed.
Avoid putting your router in basements, bathrooms, cabinets, on the floor, or near microwaves and other home appliances. Your router should be in a central location so the connection can reach throughout the entire home. Sometimes Wi-Fi can be tricky, in which case connecting to an Ethernet cable can quickly increase your download speed.
To do this, connect the Ethernet from your modem to your device. If the cable is too long or if it is outdated, try upgrading to a higher-quality, shorter cable.
Sometimes this slight change can make all the difference. Viruses on your device can cause a multitude of issues. From the Start menu, type Disk Cleanup. This opens the trusty Disk Cleanup utility that's been part of Windows for several generations of the OS.
Disk Cleanup finds unwanted junk such as temporary files, offline Web pages, and installer files on your PC and offers to delete them all at once. You may even find that your Recycle Bin is bulging at the seams. This will generally only have a noticeable effect on speed if your drive is getting close to full, however. If you don't have disk defragmentation scheduled regularly, set that up in the Optimize Drives tool, which you can find by typing its name in the Cortana search box next to the Start button.
Note that if your main disk is an SSD, then you needn't bother with defragging, since there aren't any moving parts reading the disk.
An even newer way to keep storage use is by enabling the Storage Sense option see image above. This automatically frees up space by removing temporary files and Recycle Bin items. Windows 10 manages memory more efficiently than earlier versions of the OS, but more memory always can potentially speed up PC operations.
Gaming and business laptops often still allow RAM upgrades, but that's becoming more rare. The new, slimmer ultrabooks and convertibles are usually fixed. If you still use a desktop tower, this article can show you how to add RAM. Not does Windows startup benefit, but loading and using demanding applications such as Adobe Photoshop happens much faster with an SSD. For system speedup, it makes sense to replace your internal startup hard drive, and if you use a laptop, this may also be an option.
You can run the built-in Windows Defender or a third-party app to do this, but you're best served by PCMag security guru Neil Rubenking's top pick among malware-cleanup programs, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware—it's free! But don't forget to use ongoing anti-malware protection, too. Some of the AV products have a lighter footprint on system performance than others, and the lightest of all, according to Rubenking, is Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus.
Rubenking also awards 4. See his complete roundup of the best antivirus software for full details. Of course, this isn't a good choice if you want to save electricity, but it could boost your computing speed.
From here, click on the dropdown arrow on the right side to 'Show additional plans' and then choose High Performance. Open the Control Panel and search for troubleshooting. Run the troubleshooters under System and Security, and it may find the root cause of your slowdown. This happens automatically on a schedule, but if you're experiencing slowdowns, it's worth trying.
If your PC is still hopelessly bogged down, you can use the Windows Security app's Fresh start option, but be warned that doing so removes your installed programs. You can easily get to this setting by typing adjust appearance in Cortana. In the dialog, you can use the radio button at the top labeled Adjust for best performance or select which eye-candy features you can live without from the long list of checkboxes below these choices. If you do choose the overall best-performance button, you'll lose all of the visual effects.
For example, you won't see the contents of a window you're dragging move, but rather just a rectangle representing the window's edges. Keeping the effects that you enjoy checked in the dialog is probably a better way to go.
